A full-size captain's bed built from three separate cubby boxes — one end cubby, two side cubbies — joined by a center slat platform, unlike the joined bench-module design used elsewhere here.

Build one end cubby box from the sides, divider, and top/bottom.

Build two side cubby boxes the same way.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Circular Saw. Materials: 1/4" plywood, ripped to 15 in strips, full sheet, Finish nails, 1-1/4" and 2", Wood glue
Cut the 1/4" plywood backs to fit each cubby (have the sheet ripped into 15" strips at the lumber yard first). Attach with 1-1/4" nails and glue, nailing into the center partition as well as the outer sides.

Attach the vertical, top, and bottom trim pieces to all three cubbies with 2" nails and glue.

Use 2" screws and glue to fasten the center support cleats to the backs of the two side cubbies only.

Lay the slats on top of the cleats and screw in place with 1-1/4" screws, without glue, so the bed can be disassembled easily. Also screw the end cubby to the slats.

Position the end cubby and two side cubbies together with the slat platform between them to form the complete bed frame.
Tools: Random Orbit Sander. Materials: Wood filler, Primer and paint, or stain and poly
Fill any screw holes with wood filler, sand all surfaces, and apply primer and paint, or stain and poly.
