1. Build the two X end panels
Tools: Drill / Driver, Pocket Hole Jig. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft, Wood glue
Join the mitered X arms at their crossing point with a single 3/4" pocket hole and 1-1/4" pocket hole screw, plus glue. Dry-fit first and check the crossing point is centered on both arms before you commit.
2. Attach the bottom supports
Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft, Wood glue
Attach the bottom support pieces to the bottom of each X panel on the insides, using 1-1/4" finish nails and glue, or countersunk screws.
3. Attach the bottom shelf
Materials: Pine, 1x6, 4 ft
Attach the bottom shelf boards to the bottom supports with 1-1/4" screws or finish nails and glue.
4. Attach the top shelf slats and round the corners
Tools: Jigsaw, Pocket Hole Jig, Random Orbit Sander. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft, Pine, 1x3, 4 ft, Pine, 1x4, 4 ft
Attach the three top shelf slats (bottom, middle, top) with either pocket holes or countersunk screws and glue. Once everything is assembled, use a jigsaw to round over the top and bottom corners of the X end panels, then sand the curves smooth.
