A freestanding 2x4-framed stand faced in shiplap, built with a cutout sized to a real electric fireplace insert — sized here for a 30"x24" insert but adjustable for 28–36" units.

Cut and build the front framing from the 2x4s with 2-1/2" screws, spacing the inner studs to match your insert's rough opening.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Jigsaw. Materials: Shiplap boards, 5-1/2" wide, 8 ft long, Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 2", Wood glue
Check the frame for square by comparing diagonal measurements. Cover the front with shiplap using glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, centering the insert opening on a horizontal joint, then cut out the opening for your insert.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Drill / Driver. Materials: 1x12, 8 ft, Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 2", Wood glue
Attach the 1x12 sides with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, adding screws if needed for extra security.

Add the 2x4 back framing with screws. These boards can be used to attach the stand to the wall for a fixed install.

Measure and cut the top to fit, attaching with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, with screws for extra security if needed.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the fireplace insert.
