This is a movable furniture piece with a fireplace insert built in, not the floor-to-ceiling framed surround built elsewhere in this catalog — the whole thing sits on the floor as a low stand, sized to hold a TV on top and an electric insert in the middle. Build the front 2x4 framing first, spacing the inner studs to match your specific insert's rough-opening requirements, then check the frame for square by comparing opposite diagonal measurements before covering it.
Cover the front with shiplap, centering the insert opening on a horizontal shiplap joint so the finished look reads as balanced rather than accidental, then cut the opening out to fit your insert. The 1x12 sides and top, added after the shiplap face, are what turn a bare stud frame into finished furniture — attach the back framing next, which doubles as a wall-attachment point if you want the stand fixed in place rather than freestanding.
This plan explicitly scales: adjust the 2x4 cut lengths for a 28"–36" insert with only minor changes, and for a 40"+ insert the source notes the adjustment is still straightforward. Install your insert last, strictly by its own manufacturer instructions, after every piece of trim is on.

Cut and build the front framing from the 2x4s with 2-1/2" screws, spacing the inner studs to match your insert's rough opening.
Check the frame for square by comparing diagonal measurements. Cover the front with shiplap using glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, centering the insert opening on a horizontal joint, then cut out the opening for your insert.
Attach the 1x12 sides with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, adding screws if needed for extra security.
Add the 2x4 back framing with screws. These boards can be used to attach the stand to the wall for a fixed install.
Measure and cut the top to fit, attaching with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, with screws for extra security if needed.
Measure and cut the side trim, front trim, and front corner trim. Attach with glue and brad nails, adding screws to the front trim if needed.
Sand all surfaces and apply primer and paint, or stain and poly.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the fireplace insert.
