A compound miter saw cuts both the post to length and the mitered trim rings.

1. Cut the post
Tools: Miter Saw. Materials: Pine or cedar, 4x4, scrap
Cut the 4x4 to your desired length with a compound miter saw.
2. Add the bottom trim
Tools: Brad Nailer. Materials: Flat lattice, 1/4" x 7/8"
Miter the bottom trim pieces around the base of the post and attach with glue and 1" brad or pin nails.
3. Add the top trim
Tools: Brad Nailer. Materials: Flat moulding, 1/2" x 3/4"
Repeat with the smaller top trim pieces, but leave a 1/4" reveal below the top of the post rather than mounting it flush.
