Pocket Hole Jig — optional
Predrilled holes and 2-3/4" trim screws work as a substitute for every pocket-hole joint.

1. Prep the sides
Tools: Drill / Driver, Pocket Hole Jig. Materials: Pine, 1x12, 8 ft, Pine, 1x2, 8 ft
Drill 3/4" pocket holes along the side edges of the sides (add holes along the top edge too, for attaching the top later). Attach the side trim to the outsides.
If you don't have a pocket hole jig, carefully predrill and use 2-3/4" trim screws to attach the legs in the next step instead.
2. Add the legs
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 2x2, 8 ft
Attach the 2x2 legs to the sides.
3. Add the top supports
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 2x2, 8 ft
Attach the top support pieces.
4. Build and attach the bottom shelf
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 1x12, 8 ft, Pine, 1x2, 8 ft
Build the bottom shelf first, the same way as the other shelves in the next step, then attach it to the bottom of the case.
5. Build and insert the remaining shelves
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 1x12, 8 ft, Pine, 1x2, 8 ft
Build the remaining shelves and insert into the bookcase. Fixed shelves are recommended over adjustable ones here, since they give you something solid to attach the back planking to.
6. Build and attach the top
Tools: Drill / Driver, Pocket Hole Jig. Materials: Pine, 1x3, 8 ft, Pine, 2x2, 8 ft
