Cut the handle from the 1x8. Drill two 1" holes with a hole saw where the ends of the hand-hole will be, then jigsaw out the waste between them to make the grip. Clip the top corners at 45° off square and round the top edge with the jigsaw for the crate look.
Attach the side pieces to the handle board with glue and 2" finish nails — a nailer makes this go fast. The handle board is the center spine, so the sides register off it.
Attach the remaining side pieces the same way, glue and 2" finish nails, to build out the box on both sides of the handle.
Tack the bottom on with finish nails and glue to close the caddy. Soften any sharp edges. Leave reclaimed wood raw for patina, or clean it up and finish.
