Find the studs and mark them. Hang the 1x3 cleat with its top at about 76" (components will sit 5-1/2" ABOVE the cleat — account for that when choosing height), screwed to every stud it crosses with the 3" screws.
Check level before the second screw and again after the last. Everything you build after this step inherits this line: a 1/4" slope in the cleat is a 1/4" slope in every shelf in the closet.

Drill three 3/4" pocket holes on each end of every shelf board — no holes in the sides, ever; sides stay clean because they're the visible faces. Screw the shelves between the two sides with 1-1/4" pocket screws and glue, top and bottom shelves flush with the side ends.
Every component in the system is this same operation at a different length. If you're building several, cut and drill everything as one batch, then assemble like a production line.

Glue and trim-screw a 1x6 backer across the back at the bottom, and a full 1x6 across the back at the top. The top backer is the structural one — it's what gets screwed through into the studs, and its bottom edge is what registers on the cleat.
Square the carcass against the backers as you fasten: the backers are your squaring panel as well as your hanger.

For hanging sections, screw the rod sockets to the sides — centered vertically in the hanging space, and set far enough off the wall that a hanger clears (about 10" of clearance to the back; check your deepest hanger against your carcass depth if you ripped the sides down).
Cut the 1-1/4" dowel to fit between the sockets.

Lift each component onto the cleat, slide it to position, and screw through the top 1x6 backer into every stud behind it with 3" screws. A narrow component that doesn't cover a stud gets screwed sideways to its neighbor instead — the system braces itself.
If a component ends the run with an exposed side, trim that end with a 1x2 for a finished edge. Then load it with more clothes than the old wire shelf ever held.
