The Media Hutch (Board and Batten Collection)

Start by trimming out the top and bottom of the 1x12 sides, cutting the trim to match your actual 1x12 width. A nailer is handy; 1-1/4" screws from the back work too.

Attach the 2x2 legs — these would be the legs of a bookshelf, so think of them that way. Use pocket-hole screws, or 2-1/2" finish nails and glue.

Attach the 2x2 front and back trim with pocket-hole screws (2-1/2") or trim screws and glue. You can do this before or after adding the top — do what makes sense with the parts in hand.

Attach the top to the sides and front/back trim with pocket-hole screws or trim screws and glue, and set the shelves.

Add the 1/4" back — strongly recommended on a piece this large, since the back adds a lot of strength. Nail it into the fixed shelf.

Build the controller shelf and screw it directly to the bottom of the hutch, leaving a 1-1/2" gap behind it for wires. It adds a usable low surface and stiffens the unit.

Build the small drawers from the 1x8 scraps with 1x12 fronts (adjust the front width to your actual 1x8s). Screw all the pieces together, and anchor the hutch to the wall behind it — safety first on a tall, wide piece. Sand and finish.
