A full-width hanging couch, not a bench — a wide 2x4 seat frame with center supports, flat modern slat arms and back, sized and reinforced for real two- and three-person loads.

Tools: Drill / Driver, Tape Measure. Materials: 2x4, 8 ft, Exterior self-tapping screws, 2-1/2" to 3", star bit
Build the seat frame's front, back, and sides using the longer screws, two per joint.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 2x4, 8 ft, Exterior self-tapping screws, 2-1/2" to 3", star bit
Add both center supports to the seat frame with the longer screws, two per joint. This wide a seat needs both — skip one and the middle of the swing will develop a visible sag under real weight.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 2x4, 8 ft, Exterior self-tapping screws, 2-1/2" to 3", star bit
Attach the back-rest and arm-rest supports to the frame, all outside edges flush, three screws per joint using the longer screws — one more screw than a typical joint here, since this is the connection that carries every sitting and leaning load.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 2x4, 8 ft, Exterior self-tapping screws, 2-1/2" to 3", star bit
Attach each arm rest to the top of its front support and to the back support in one continuous run, two screws per joint with the longer screws — this ties the whole side structure together rather than leaving the arm as a separate cap.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 1x6, 72", Exterior self-tapping screws, 1-1/2" to 2", star bit
Attach the top seat-back slat to the back supports, all outside edges flush, using the shorter screws, two per joint.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 2x4, 8 ft, Exterior self-tapping screws, 1-1/2" to 2", star bit, Exterior self-tapping screws, 2-1/2" to 3", star bit
Attach the remaining back supports into the seat frame with the longer screws, two per joint, then attach them to the top slat you just installed with the shorter screws, two per joint.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: 1x6, 72", Exterior self-tapping screws, 1-1/2" to 2", star bit
Attach the remaining back slats with the shorter screws, two per joint, even gaps top to bottom.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Random Orbit Sander. Materials: 1x6, 72", Exterior self-tapping screws, 1-1/2" to 2", star bit
Attach the seat slats to the seat frame with the shorter screws, two per joint, small even gaps for drainage. Sand every edge before finishing — this is a couch, not a bench, and every surface gets real contact.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Drill Bit Set, Level. Materials: Rated porch swing hanging hardware and chain
This is a heavy piece of furniture and must be hung properly — two adults on it easily approaches 400+ lbs of live, swinging load. Hang from the SIDE APRONS of the seat frame, where the majority of the weight concentrates, with hardware rated well past the swing's real load and anchored into structural framing (a porch beam or ceiling joists), never into ceiling material alone.
A slight backward hang angle — about 5° — noticeably improves comfort once someone's sitting in it. Build, hang, and use at your own risk; verify your hanging point and hardware before anyone sits down.
