Tools: Drill / Driver, Drill Bit Set, Miter Saw. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft
Cut all boards to size, with the leg boards cut at their angled ends as specified. Drill pivot holes in the leg boards as laid out — you'll only need the bottom set of holes on two of the four leg boards.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft, Wood glue, exterior-rated
Attach the two leg boards together in pairs with 2" fasteners. If screwing, predrill carefully; if nailing, use plenty of exterior-rated glue.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Tape Measure. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft
Measure carefully and attach the bottom shelf supports with 2" screws, overhanging 3/4" from the legs on each side.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Drill Bit Set. Materials: 2", 1/4" diameter bolts, 1/4" washers
Drill 1/4" holes in the bottom shelf support board. Attach the back leg and bottom shelf support together with a bolt, using three washers — one on each end and one between the boards to protect the finish from wear. Set this assembly aside.
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Pine, 1x2, 8 ft, Wood glue, exterior-rated
Attach the shelf end supports with 2" screws and glue.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Drill Bit Set, Level, Spring Clamps. Materials: 2", 1/4" diameter bolts, 1/4" washers, 1/4" nuts
Set a level across the top of the shelves as you clamp them onto the frame, and drill matched 1/4" holes through both the shelf and the leg/support assembly at once — drilling them together, rather than separately, is what keeps every shelf sitting flat once folded open. Attach with bolts so the shelves can pivot freely, checking that the shelf tops are level before you fully tighten each one.
Fold the shelves flat against the frame and back open a few times to confirm everything pivots smoothly before loading it with plants.
