Build the 2x4 frame for the headboard — the outside dimensions of the frame are your completed headboard's dimensions, so confirm they match your bed and wall space before cutting.
Add the cleats in the position needed to attach to your specific bed frame or footboard, cut to size for your hardware.
Attach the plywood or paneling to the frame, with the cleats directly against the back side of the panel.
Cover the front of the headboard with batting, padding, or old comforters, stapling neatly at the back. Then cover in your chosen fabric, pulling snug as you go to avoid wrinkles on the front, and staple at the back.
Attach the finished headboard to the wall using a French cleat, or to the bed frame itself, for stability — this headboard must not be left free-standing against a wall.
