Two identical 2x4 frames form the top and bottom of this piece, each lined with a sheet of 3/8" plywood to keep bark and debris contained rather than resting logs directly against bare 2x4 rails. Build both frames with 3" screws, two per joint, then attach the plywood tray liner to the bottom frame with 3/4" brad nails and glue.
The front legs are a paired A-frame style, while the back gets a single flat leg at each end — attach the front leg pairs to the front of the trays first, keeping all outside edges flush, then add the single back legs. The full plywood back panel goes on next, closing off the back of the piece entirely — this is what turns an open firewood cradle into an actual enclosed console.
The top is a 1x12 board with 1x8 edge trim, overhanging the frame below. Additional supports or hidden storage can be built into the top if you want a lift-top compartment, but the base build is a straightforward open firewood tray console without one.

Build two frames out of the 2x4 long and short rails using 3" screws, two per joint.
Attach the plywood tray liner to the bottom frame with 3/4" brad nails and wood glue.
Attach the front legs to the front of both trays with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue, keeping outside edges flush. Add the single back legs the same way.
Attach the plywood back panel to the project with 3/4" brad nails and glue.
Attach the top board and edge trim with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue. Add supports or hidden storage to the top if desired.
Sand all surfaces and apply paint or stain.
