1. Cut the angled boards
Tools: Table Saw. Materials: Pine or hardwood boards, 1x4, assorted
Cut boards to your desired angled shape — a miter saw or table saw both work — so they'll fan together into one plaque.
2. Sand before staining
Tools: Random Orbit Sander
Sand all boards smooth before staining, since it's much easier to sand flat individual boards than a glued-up assembly.
3. Stain in an ombre gradient
Materials: Wood stain, light shade, Wood stain, medium shade, Wood stain, dark shade
Stain each board a different shade — light, medium, dark — to build an ombre gradient effect across the set.
4. Glue up the plaque
Tools: Bar / Pipe Clamps. Materials: Pine or hardwood boards, 1x4, assorted, Wood glue
Glue the boards together in ombre order, centering the arrangement by eye, and weight it with something heavy while the glue sets, about 30 minutes.
5. Mount the clock face
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Clock movement with round face
Center the purchased clock face on the assembled plaque and mark the screw location using the clock's back notch. Screw it on snugly, flush with the back, so it can still be removed for battery changes.
6. Hang it
Tools: Drill / Driver. Materials: Sawtooth hanger
Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back of the plaque.
