A workbench alone gives you a surface; this one adds a hutch above it, which is what actually gets small parts, jars, and offcuts off the work surface instead of accumulating in the one place you need clear for the next project.
Every cut length in this plan is chosen to come out of an 8ft 2x4 or a 4x8 plywood sheet with minimal waste — the tall legs run the full 84" a 2x4 can supply before the hutch shelf breaks the run, and the plywood top and shelf panels are sized directly off full sheet widths. That's a deliberate cost decision, not a coincidence, and it's worth cutting to these exact numbers rather than rounding for convenience.
The hutch back is left open. A closed back would need its own panel and framing for very little practical benefit in a garage setting, where the bench usually sits against a wall anyway.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Build the hutch's back frame flat on the floor, keeping every edge flush, fastened with the longer 2-3/4" screws.
Build the front frame the same way, but leave out the bottom two rails so the main workbench stays open underneath.
Join the front and back frames with the 13" top side rails, which set the bench's overall depth.
Build the lower shelf frame separately, then attach it to the back rail and level it against the front frame.
Attach the workbench tabletop support rails and the main center support, checking level as you go, then stand the short legs into place and fasten them with screws and glue.
Cut and attach the plywood panels to the workbench top and hutch shelf using the shorter screws.
