Workbench to Get the Job Done

Assemble the four legs with the lower shelf stretchers and corner feet blocks. Measure your own 2x4 stock before cutting — actual dimensions vary by region and supplier.

Assemble the shelf frame from the long stretchers, then cut the plywood shelf panel to fit. Measure once, then measure again before cutting.

Before building the top frame, clamp everything together and check width, length, and vertical measurements for square. If you plan to mount heavy stationary tools, position one under-top support closer to one end rather than centering all of them evenly — that support then doubles as a mounting stud for the tool.

Screw the plywood top panel down with 1-1/2" construction screws, countersinking the heads so nothing catches your hand while working. Filling the countersunk holes with wood filler is optional on a bench top that's going to take hits regardless.

Sand any rough edges smooth. A shop bench doesn't need a fussy finish — a coat of something to seal the plywood edges is enough.
