This ladder shelf stands freestanding on four legs rather than leaning against a wall like this catalog's other ladder-style bookshelf — a genuinely different structural approach even though the finished silhouette looks similar. Cut all boards from the cut list first, cutting the longest lengths before the shorter ones to get the best yield from your lumber. The angled front legs need a specific technique: set a miter saw to 15° on the deck and cut both ends parallel to each other, measuring the overall length long-point to short-point along the same edge.
After cutting the angled front legs, there's a second cut most builders would miss: measure in 1-3/4" from the short side, square a line, and cut it off with a jigsaw — this creates the flat foot that lets the angled leg actually sit level on the floor instead of resting on a point.
Assemble the vertical back ladder first, then attach the front legs to it, checking the overall bottom measurement lands at 18" before fastening — this width is what keeps the finished piece from tipping forward once weight is added to the upper shelves. The front ladder boards attach next, leveled carefully since they're not resting flat on anything the way the back ladder is, and the shelving boards center on top of the ladder pieces last.
