Wood Shelf Covers for Wire Shelving

This project keeps the existing wire shelving bracket-and-track hardware entirely in place and simply covers it with solid wood shelves, rather than tearing out wire shelving to build something from scratch. Wall mounting has two legitimate methods: securing the vertical track standards directly to studs (fewer visible parts, but you need studs where you want the tracks), or using a horizontal hang track across the top that the standards clip onto (more beginner-friendly and flexible, but the hang track itself stays visible). Choose based on your wall and your tolerance for visible hardware, not just whichever is easier.

The tops of all vertical standards need to land at the same height — the plan recommends this height match your desired top shelf position — since uneven standards will make every shelf below them subtly out of level even if each individual bracket reads level on its own.

Building the shelf covers themselves is genuinely simple: a 1x12 cut to your desired shelf length, with a 1x4 nailed and glued to the front edge for a finished look and a bit of extra rigidity. Cut each shelf to the length that matches your own closet or space — this is inherently a custom-width project, so the cut list below shows a representative 36" shelf length as a worked example rather than a fixed universal size. Secure the finished shelf covers to the brackets with short screws sized to your specific bracket hardware, driving about 1/2" into the wood.
