Step-by-step build — 4 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Drill pocket holes in the bottom of the two longer 1x2 support pieces and attach them to the four legs with 1-1/4" pocket screws and glue, forming a low rectangular frame that stands on four short feet.
Nail the six end slats to the frame with 3/4" brads and glue, starting 2-1/2" up from the bottom of the legs — that gap is what lets one crate nest into the top of another when you stack them.
With the end slats holding the legs together, measure your actual box and cut the side slats to fit rather than to a fixed length. Nail on the same way, brads and glue.
Set the eight bottom slats inside the crate, resting on the bottom supports. Leave them unfastened — the whole point is being able to lift them out to dump and rinse the crate without disassembling anything.
