The 2x6 sides get their corners cut off at 45°, which is a small detail that does a lot of visual work — it softens the top profile and reads as intentional pallet-style construction, even though the rest of the piece is built from ordinary dimensional lumber, not reclaimed pallet boards.
Use screws, not nails, when attaching the back boards to the sides and shelf. This is the one place in the build where the fastener choice really matters: those back boards are what the whole piece hangs from, and nails can work loose from repeated coat-hanging weight over time in a way that screws won't. Hang the finished piece into at least two wall studs — a coat rack with a full winter jacket load on six hooks is genuinely heavy, and drywall anchors alone aren't a safe bet for that weight.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Attach the bottom to the sides with either pocket holes (set for 1-1/2" stock, 2-1/2" pocket hole screws) or 2-1/2" wood screws countersunk. Attach the shelf to the sides the same way, using the 3/4" pocket hole setting and 1-1/2" pocket hole screws if using a jig.
Attach the back boards to the sides and shelf with 2" screws and glue. Use screws here specifically, not nails — this is what the whole piece hangs from, and nails can work loose under repeated coat-hanging weight.
Attach the front 1x4 board with 2" screws and glue, then attach the hooks to it. Hang the whole piece into at least two wall studs with wood screws through the back — a loaded coat rack is heavier than it looks, and drywall anchors alone aren't reliable for that weight.
