Simplest Kids Play Table

Cut all boards per the cut list. Before you finalize the side aprons, measure your actual 1x8 boards — they don't always measure a true 7-1/2" wide. If yours are narrower, take the difference, multiply by three (three boards make the top), and subtract that number from the side apron length.

Drill pocket holes in all the joining ends — marking an X at each pocket-hole location as you cut keeps you from losing track of which end goes where.

Join the three 1x8 boards edge to edge with pocket holes and glue. Solid wood here means the top can always be sanded and refinished later — a genuinely useful property for a surface that's about to meet crayons and markers.

Drill all remaining pocket holes, then attach the legs to the aprons. Insetting the aprons slightly, or drilling the pocket holes on the outside faces, helps keep the legs from splitting. Check for square as you go.

Line the tabletop up with the base and screw them together through the apron's pocket holes. Pocket holes are forgiving here — even if the tabletop isn't perfectly flat on its own, the screws pull it square against the base as they're driven.

Sand and finish, and let a kid loose on it.
