Simple Rustic Modern Console Table

This console pares a console table down to its barest structural minimum: a top, two solid 1x12 legs, a bottom shelf, and a single inset 1x10 back board — four boards, no aprons, no separate stretchers. Attach the top to the legs first with either brad nails and glue or pocket holes, a choice the plan leaves genuinely open since either works fine at this scale.

The back board is the one piece worth some care: it sets in flush between the two legs rather than spanning across their outside faces, which is what gives the piece its clean, inset look from the front. This inset back board is doing real structural work despite its plain appearance — it's the only piece tying the two legs together besides the top and shelf, so getting it snug against both legs matters more than it looks like it should on a four-board table.

The bottom shelf attaches to the sides and the back board last, closing up the whole structure. Because there's no separate apron or stretcher system, keeping every joint square as you go is what keeps the finished piece from racking — there's no second chance to add bracing after the fact without it showing.
