A narrow console built from three 1x10 boards forming an open-ended box, with a single 1" dowel passing through the center divider to hang quilts, blankets, or bathroom towels below the top. The genius of it is how little cutting there is: two of the three boards need no cutting at all, and the whole thing goes together with 3/4" screws.
The only step that takes care is the hole for the dowel. A hole saw sized to your rod is the clean way — a 1-1/4" hole saw for a 1" dowel gives a little clearance. No hole saw? Trace the rod end onto the center board and cut it out with a jigsaw; it won't be perfect but the dowel hides the edge. Cut the dowel last and measure the actual distance between your assembled ends before you do, so it fits instead of guessing.
The feet are whatever scrap you have — 2x2, 4x4 offcuts, or short table legs. Six 4" blocks lift the console off the floor and give it a little presence. Use two or three screws per foot so they can't twist.

If you have a hole saw close to your rod diameter — a 1-1/4" saw for a 1" dowel — use it on the center board; it's fast and clean. Otherwise, trace the rod end onto the board and cut the opening with a jigsaw. It doesn't have to be pretty; the dowel covers the edge.
Predrill and countersink the two end joints. Screw the two end boards to the top/sides first, then measure 36" to the center and predrill for the center board (the one with the cutout). Important: attach the two ends before the center so you can register the center off a square box rather than chasing it. Slide the dowel through as you set the center board so you don't box yourself out of installing it.
Prop the box on its four corner feet plus two center feet and screw them on — three screws per foot if you're using 2x2 so they can't twist, one or two is enough for chunkier stock. Check it sits level, sand, and finish.
