Simple 1x12 Bench or Bedside Table

This is about as simple as a real piece of furniture gets — two 1x12 legs, a shelf, a top, and a pair of side trim boards, with all the visual interest coming from a jigsaw-cut leg profile rather than any added parts. Cut the bottom of each leg into a shape using a jigsaw, following a traced or measured curve rather than leaving the legs as plain rectangles — this is the one step that takes any real technique, and it's worth taking slowly since both legs need to end up matching.

Attach the shelf and top to the legs next, and if you're using pocket holes, attach the top before the shelf — the plan is specific about this order because once the shelf is in place, there's no longer room to fit a drill inside the cavity to reach the top's pocket holes. Nails and glue don't have this constraint and can go in either order.

The side support trim goes on last, running the full length of the piece from front to back — this single board is what actually ties the top, shelf, and both legs into one rigid unit, rather than four parts that happen to be fastened near each other. At this scale it works equally well as a slim bedside table or a small entry bench.
