Step-by-step build — 3 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Take one 1x3 piece and drill a grid of holes through it with a bit a little larger than the crayons, so they drop in and out easily. Drill all the way through. For markers or taller crayons/pencils, drill the middle layer too so the deeper holes keep tall items standing straight.
Glue and clamp the drilled top piece to the second and third pieces, which form the solid floor the crayons stand on. Let it dry, then sand the outside edges smooth.
Fill the holes with crayons and add lettering or a name to the front if it's a gift. Done — this also makes the crayon block for a travel lap desk if you want to expand on it.
