About as simple as a project gets, and a genuinely useful one: three short pieces of 1x3 stacked and glued, with the top piece drilled full of holes so crayons or pencils stand up in a tidy block. It's the classic use for the offcut too short to save but too good to toss.
The only decision is bit size and depth. Drill with a bit slightly larger than the crayons so they drop in and out easily — too tight and small hands can't work them. For markers or tall pencils, you may want to drill the middle layer too so the deeper holes hold taller items upright instead of letting them tip. Drill the top piece all the way through, then glue it to the two solid pieces below, which become the floor the crayons rest on.

Take one 1x3 piece and drill a grid of holes through it with a bit a little larger than the crayons, so they drop in and out easily. Drill all the way through. For markers or taller crayons/pencils, drill the middle layer too so the deeper holes keep tall items standing straight.
Glue and clamp the drilled top piece to the second and third pieces, which form the solid floor the crayons stand on. Let it dry, then sand the outside edges smooth.
Fill the holes with crayons and add lettering or a name to the front if it's a gift. Done — this also makes the crayon block for a travel lap desk if you want to expand on it.
