This hall tree is a bench and a coat rack built as one frame — short front legs and tall back legs joined by horizontal 2x4 and 2x2 rails, with the signature X pattern scribed and cut into the back panel's open bays rather than built from a fixed cut list. Scribing the Xs directly against the assembled frame, the way a reference video demonstrates, is what makes each X actually fit its bay — a pre-cut X built to a plan number rarely lands perfectly square against a frame that has its own small real-world variance.
Build the smaller X pieces and attach them to the larger diagonal piece with a single pocket hole each before mounting the whole X assembly to the outside of the legs — assembling the X as its own unit first, then attaching it, keeps the angles consistent in a way that's much harder to manage cutting and fitting pieces one at a time in place.
The 2x8 seat is built as two boards joined edge to edge with pocket holes before it's ever attached to the frame, and the plywood back and header go on last, closing up the whole assembly. Four hooks along the header are the actual point of the piece — plan their spacing to match actual coats and bags before finishing, not just evenly across the width.

Drill two 1-1/2" pocket holes on each end of all the shorter 2x4 end pieces and attach to the front legs, then to the back legs, with 2-1/2" pocket hole screws.
Drill two 1-1/2" pocket holes on each end of the 2x4 tie-ins and attach to the legs. Drill one 1-1/2" pocket hole on each end of the 2x2 tie-ins and attach the same way.
Scribe and cut the X pieces directly against the assembled bays, following a reference video for the technique. Attach the smaller X pieces to the larger diagonal piece with single pocket holes, then attach the completed X assembly to the outside of the legs with 2-1/2" screws.
Join the two 2x8 seat boards edge to edge with 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws. Attach the whole seat from underneath with 2-1/2" screws, four should be plenty.
Attach the 2x2 end trim to the seat with 2" brad nails or 2-1/2" self-tapping screws.
Attach the plywood back with 3/4" brad nails and wood glue. Attach the header with 2-1/2" self-tapping screws.
Space and attach four coat hooks along the header to match your actual coats and bags rather than spacing them purely evenly. Sand and finish the whole piece.
