Rustic Modern Platform Bed with Headboard

Lay the seven 1x6 planks on a flat surface, snug the edges, and attach the 2x2 top rail across the top with brads and glue. Add the vertical 2x2s — ends first, then evenly spaced — nailing through from the back so the face stays clean.

Sand and finish it now, flat. The headboard's face is the first thing seen in the room every day; give it the finish schedule it deserves while it's still bench work.

Screw each 2x4 cap flat on top of its 2x6 beam, flush to the INSIDE face — that's the L. The footboard's cap overextends 2" past the beam at each end; center it before screwing.

Prefinish these too. Sections that arrive in the bedroom finished make assembly a screwdriver evening instead of a project.

Screw the footboard to the side rails with the 2-1/2" screws, then the rails to the headboard, and set the frame in position. Check the frame's diagonals before the last screws — a racked frame telegraphs into the braces next step.

Screw the 45° cross braces into the bottom corners (and at the headboard too, if you want maximum stillness) — these triangles are what keep a platform bed from ever learning to wiggle. Run the 2x2 cleats along the rails, and for full size up, add the center 2x4 flush with the cleat tops, with optional center legs under it.

Lay the slats at even (~4") gaps and screw each down. Check your mattress maker's slat spec — foam mattresses want closer spacing. Mattress on; the lumber yard would like to know how it became furniture this fast.
