The simplest project in the catalog, and the one most likely to fail — because almost everyone hangs it on drywall anchors.
A loaded coat rack in a family entryway carries 30–50 lbs, applied as a downward yank every time someone grabs a jacket. Drywall anchors will hold for a season and then tear out, taking a chunk of your wall with them.
Into studs. Every time. Get that right and this is a ninety-minute project that lasts forever.

A board foot is a volume, not a length: 144 cubic inches, or a piece 1″ thick by 12″ wide by 12″ long. The “≈” note beside each row shows roughly how much 3/4″ × 6″ board that works out to.

Locate your studs first. Standard spacing is 16" on center.
Your board's length is decided by where the studs are — you want to hit at least two of them, ideally three. A 32" board spanning two studs with overhang is the usual answer.
Designing the board first and hoping studs turn up where you need them is exactly how coat racks end up on drywall anchors.
Flatten, thickness to 3/4", rip to 5" wide, crosscut to length.
If you bought a surfaced board and it's flat, you can skip straight to sanding. There's no shame in that here.
Mark five evenly spaced hole positions along the centerline. Bore holes matching your pegs' tenons — usually 1/2" — about 5/8" deep.
Perpendicular matters. Drill press if you have one; if not, clamp a scrap block with a squared hole as a guide. A peg leaning 5° off square is instantly visible and looks like a mistake, because it is one.
Chamfer or round over the front edges and the ends. Even a small 1/8" chamfer takes the board from 'plank' to 'made'.
Optional: a gentle curve along the top edge. Nice touch, five extra minutes.
Drill three mounting holes on the board's centerline, positioned to land on your studs.
Counterbore each one so the screw head sits below the surface and a wood plug can cover it. This is the detail that hides the hardware and makes it look intentional.
Glue the pegs in. Sand to 220.
White oak takes hardwax oil beautifully — the ray fleck in quartersawn stock lights up. Two or three coats.
Finish before mounting. You cannot finish the back of a board that's already on the wall.
Level the board on the wall, drill pilot holes through the counterbores, and drive 3" screws into the studs.
Glue the plugs in over the screw heads, pare them flush when dry, touch up the finish.
Then hang a heavy winter coat on the end peg and lean on it. It shouldn't budge. If it does, you missed a stud — take it down and fix it now, not after it rips out of the wall.
