Numbered Cubbies on the Wall

This is a shallow wall organizer: a long, low box divided into nine angled cubbies, perfect for sorting mail, holding papers, or giving each kid a numbered daily slot. It's a quick 1x3-and-1x2 build with one clever assembly aid — a scrap spacer block that guarantees every bay comes out the same width.

The dividers are cut with a 45° angle on one end (long-point measurement), so the fronts of the cubbies are open and angled for easy access — you can see and grab what's in each slot. The trick to even spacing is cutting a scrap 1x3 to exactly 4" and using it as a gauge: butt each divider against the block as you fasten it, and all nine bays land at 4" without measuring each one.

Assembly is three passes: dividers to the bottom board, then the back boards, then the front boards, using the 4" block throughout. One practical note from the build: as you fasten near the top, switch from 2" to 1-1/4" nails, because the 45° miter leaves less material and a 2" nail won't have clearance. And don't forget glue. Number the cubbies with paint, vinyl, or little tags, and mount it to the wall studs. A battery brad nailer that needs a hard push can make the divider step fiddly — marking, predrilling, and screwing is a fine alternative.
