This hutch is designed to sit on top of a matching modular base, and its sides are ripped from 3/4" plywood into 11-1/2"-wide strips rather than built from solid 1x12 — plywood strips stay flatter over time and let you share material with the base if you're building both. If you'd rather use real 1x12 lumber, that works too, but measure your actual board width first since it will shift the other measurements slightly.
The wine grid itself is built from interlocking 1/4" plywood dividers — three tall pieces and seven short ones, slid together like a puzzle rather than glued into a fixed frame. Clamping the pieces together and cutting them as a stack, rather than one at a time, is what keeps every slot lining up. The grid is built to lift out through the front for cleaning or rearranging, and the whole hutch must be secured to the base below it and to a wall stud behind — a tall, front-loaded cabinet like this is a genuine tipping hazard if left to stand on its own.

This project is shown built from 3/4" plywood ripped into 11-1/2"-wide strips; you can use solid 1x12 instead, but measure your actual board width first and adjust measurements accordingly.
Drill pocket holes along the side and top edges of both side pieces for attaching the top and legs in later steps. Then, on the outside faces, nail 1x2 trim at the top and bottom with 1-1/4" finish nails and glue, keeping the outside edges flush.
Attach the legs to the sides with 1-1/4" pocket-hole screws and wood glue.
Build the bottom shelf with pocket holes and attach it to the sides the same way, flush to the bottom.
Attach the top, flush to the front, along with its trim pieces.
Before cutting the wine grid, dry-fit the carcass together and check it for square — the grid pieces below need a true rectangular opening to slide into.
Clamp the plywood pieces for the tall dividers together and cut them all at once as a stack — this keeps every slot lining up between pieces. You need three tall dividers.
Cut the seven short dividers the same way, clamped together as a stack.
Slide the tall and short dividers together to form the interlocking wine grid.
Insert the assembled grid into the hutch. To make it easy to remove later, keep the small shelf pieces removable from the front — you can then pull the shelves out, collapse the tall dividers, and slide the whole grid out through the front.
Nail the back panel on with glue. Secure the hutch to its base to avoid a tipping hazard, and also screw it to a wall stud behind it — this is a tall, front-loaded piece and must not be left freestanding.
