Master Closet Shoe Cubbies

Lay out shelf positions on both faces of the center divider with a square, working from the bottom up so the spacing matches side to side. Mark both faces now — you'll be building each side as its own mirror-image unit off this one board, and mismatched marks mean mismatched shelves later.

Set your jig for 3/4" stock and drill pocket holes along one edge of each of the eight shelf boards. Attach them to the center divider one side at a time with 1-1/4" pocket screws and glue, working up from the bottom to your marked lines.

Flip to the other face and repeat, attaching the remaining four shelves to match your marks. Sand every surface — this sits at shoe level and gets bumped and scuffed constantly.

Slide the finished unit into your closet opening. It's stable enough to sit unattached, which is the point — pull it back out any time. If you'd rather it never shifts, drive a couple of screws or nails through the top into the closet framing, but it isn't required.
