Step-by-step build — 8 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Build the basic 2x6 frame sized for a queen mattress, using pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws. Widen for a king or narrow for a twin/full by adjusting frame width only.
Attach the side cleats to the inside faces of the frame sides to support the front boards.
Attach additional boards to the front, taking time to make sure the ends match up perfectly and everything sits flush.
Add the end blocking pieces to finish off the frame ends.
Attach the header cleat, then the header cap across the top with screws.
Attach the 1/4" plywood back panel to fill in the open frame face, or substitute an upholstered panel for a padded look.
Apply the moulding trim directly over the finished frame front in your chosen pattern, mitering corners as needed. Optionally add a second moulding pattern on the center panel for extra detail.
Sand all surfaces and apply primer and paint, or stain and poly.
