Build the base frame from the 1x2 pieces with 1-1/4" brad nails and wood glue.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Random Orbit Sander. Materials: Pine, 1x8, 3 ft
Apply glue to the frame and set it on the underside of the 1x8 top, positioned well inside the top's edges so the frame won't be visible from eye level — this inset is what makes the finished piece look like it's floating. Let the glue dry fully.
Once dry, flip the assembly over and attach with 1-1/4" brad nails and wood glue for a permanent hold.
