Attach the two end pieces to the bottom with glue and brad nails, forming an open U.

Attach the four lath strips to the ends and bottom with glue and brad nails to make the open sides. Thin lath splits easily, so don't overdrive the brads.
Materials: Wood stain, Chalkboard label
Stain the crate, then attach the chalkboard label to the front with glue and write on it. Fill with hot-cocoa supplies and gift it.
