Assemble the frame pieces starting in the center and working outward so you don't get boxed into a corner. Mark all joints and fasten with glue and 2" finish nails, or screws, or a pocket-hole jig.

Mark the joints and attach the plywood chalkboard panel into the assembled frame.

Drill 1/2"-diameter holes in the top and bottom frame pieces for the paper roll. Leave the dowel long enough on both ends so it can be rolled by hand to feed the paper.

Add optional moulding or trim around the chalkboard edges if wanted. Attach the top to the frame with basic hinges along the bottom edge, so it folds down as a flat desk. Read your hinge support hardware's instructions carefully — some hinge supports need extra clearance if the paper-roll holder is also installed; a chain or cable mounted on the outside is a reliable workaround.

Attach D-ring hanging brackets and mount to the wall. Anchor at least one point into a real wall stud, with the remaining points properly anchored in drywall — never rely on drywall alone for a desk that will be folded down and used regularly.

Sand all edges. Apply chalkboard paint to the panel if using it that way.
