This hall tree is a genuinely two-part build: a bench-height storage cubby section on plywood, topped by a tall jigsaw-shaped hook panel that rises well above seat height — combining what this catalog's other entryway benches keep as separate pieces (a bench and a wall-mounted hook rail) into one continuous unit. Build the bench storage area first from ripped plywood, following the cubby layout, then add bottom supports that transfer a sitter's weight straight down to the floor rather than through the cubby dividers alone.
The face frame comes next, built with pocket holes and attached with finish nails and glue — this is what gives the piece its finished furniture look rather than exposed plywood edges. Base moulding wraps the bottom of the bench section, and the plan notes a genuine option here: raise the bottom 1" and use a wider 3-1/4" moulding instead of the standard 2-1/4" if you want a chunkier base profile.
The hook panel's shape is cut from a 1x12 with a jigsaw — clamp the two panel pieces together and sand until they match exactly, the same matching technique this catalog uses for other paired jigsaw cuts, since a hand-shaped profile that doesn't mirror cleanly is immediately visible on a piece this prominent. The back panel goes on last, shown split into three separate boards specifically so the whole assembly can still fit through a car trunk or door if you're transporting it after building.

Build the bench box from the ripped plywood pieces (top, bottom, dividers, end panels), following the cubby layout, using 3/4" pocket holes and 1-1/4" pocket hole screws.
Attach the bottom support rails under the bench so a sitter's weight transfers directly to the floor.
Build the face frame with 3/4" pocket holes and 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, and attach to the bench box with 1-1/4" finish nails and glue.
Wrap the base moulding around the bottom of the bench section, mitering corners as needed.
Build the vertical back frame for the hook panel from the 1x4 sides and 1x3 rails with pocket holes, attaching it above the bench section.
Attach the top trim and top cap across the top of the hook panel frame.
Mark the shaped profile on the 1x12 hook panel side pieces and cut out with a jigsaw. Clamp the two pieces together and sand until they match exactly. Attach in place.
Attach the three back panel sections, then attach coat hooks. Sand all surfaces and apply primer and paint, or stain and poly.
