The bench and the wall shelf are two genuinely separate builds meant to hang and sit together, each made from solid 1x12 or 1x8 boards rather than a plywood carcass — a different construction from this catalog's poplar-over-plywood entryway bench. On the bench, attach the main boards with either screws or pocket holes and glue, then measure and mark the divider positions before attaching them, since the dividers set the cubby spacing for whatever's stored underneath.
The bench is intentionally built narrow with 1x12s, and the plan calls this out directly — substitute a wider project panel for every 1x12 if you want a deeper seat, and the whole design scales with it. If the front footer trim is fighting you where it meets the bottom board, a scrap 1x4 block flat-nailed to the underside in just the center area gives it something to bite into.
On the shelf, cut the sides off at an angle rather than leaving them square — this keeps a sharp corner from sitting at eye level where someone could catch it walking past. Attach the double hooks to the hook board before hanging, then mount the whole shelf by locating a wall stud and screwing through the hook board into it — the mounting hole can be hidden afterward with wood filler and matching paint or stain.

Nail the top back trim to the back of the seat, then attach the seat to the base with screws or pocket holes.
Measure and cut the top side trim, footer sides, and footer front to fit, and attach with brad nails and glue.
Cut the plywood back with a circular saw, saving the scrap for the shelf back, and attach with 3/4" brad nails.
Nail the shelf boards, dividers, and sides together with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails, angling the side cuts to avoid a sharp corner at eye level.
Attach the top back and top front with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue.
Attach the shelf back with 3/4" brad nails and glue. Attach the double hooks to the hook board.
Sand and finish both pieces. Hang the shelf by locating a wall stud and screwing through the hook board into it, hiding the hole with wood filler and paint or stain.
