Overall cost: $$$. Lumber varies by region, species, and season, so we give a band rather than a figure.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Speed Square. Materials: 1x12, 8 ft, 1x12, 6 ft, Wood screws, 2", Wood glue
Because people sit on it, join the main 1x12 boards with 2" screws or 1-1/4" pocket screws (3/4" setting) rather than nails alone. Attach the sides to the bottom, then set the dividers to create the cubbies.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Drill / Driver, Tape Measure. Materials: 1x4, 8 ft, Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 3/4", Wood glue
Attach the seat top to the base with 2" screws or pocket holes. Measure and cut the 1x4 trim to fit — top sides, footer sides, and footer front — and attach all with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue. If the center footer is hard to attach to the bottom, add a scrap 1x4 block flat-nailed to the underside as a backer.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Circular Saw. Materials: 1/4" plywood, 48" x 24", Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 3/4"
Cut the bench back with a circular saw and save the scrap for the shelf back. Attach with 3/4" brad nails and glue.
Tools: Brad Nailer, Circular Saw. Materials: 1x8, 8 ft, 1x8, 10 ft, Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 3/4", Wood glue
Build the shelf with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails — it isn't structural. Assemble the main shelf and back with the dividers. Cut the side pieces' tops at an angle so there's no sharp corner at eye level, and attach them.
Tools: Brad Nailer. Materials: 1x8, 10 ft, 1x2, 6 ft, 1/4" plywood, 48" x 24", Brad nails, 1-1/4" and 3/4", Wood glue
Attach the shelf top back (1x2) and top front (1x8) with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue. Then attach the 1/4" back with 3/4" brad nails and glue.
Tools: Drill / Driver, Random Orbit Sander. Materials: Double hooks, Wood screws, 2", Finish
Attach the double hooks to the thick hook board. To hang the shelf, locate a wall stud and screw through the 1x8 hook board into the stud — a shelf full of heavy coats will pull drywall anchors out. Sand and finish both pieces to match.
