Step-by-step build — 4 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Attach the 2x4 base pieces together using a fastener between 2-1/2" and 2-3/4" long. If nailing, use glue as well.
Drill 3/4" pocket holes to attach each stair spindle to the base, one on each side. Attach with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws.
Cut the corbel shapes from the 1x6 with a jigsaw, test-fitting against the spindle's turned profile before finalizing the cut — a corbel that doesn't sit flush leaves a visible gap. Attach with 3/4" pocket holes to both the spindle and the 2x4 base.
Drill out the top of each spindle for the curtain rod finials and attach.
Attach the shelf boards between the corbels with screws into the 2x4 base and corbels. Measure the distance between the two spindles at the top and cut the closet rod (or 1x2) to fit. Attach with 3/4" pocket holes, 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, and glue.
