Step-by-step build — 4 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
This is the hardest step: getting the sides to match. Carefully transfer the pattern to both 1x6 sides and cut them with a jigsaw. Sand the pair together until the edges are even — a mismatch stands out on a symmetric piece.
Attach the two sides to the bottom with 1-1/4" pocket screws, or 2" finish nails and glue driven from the outside faces.
Add the shelves with the same joinery. The middle shelf sits 10-3/4" up from the bottom of the sides — dry-fit the cubby dividers to help you place it accurately.
Add the cubby dividers with 2" finish nails and glue from the top and bottom. Finish the wood frame before adding the chalkboard. Mount the hooks, set the chalkboard, and hang the shelf from wall studs or a rated picture-hanging kit.
