This solves the perennial garage problem: a bike leaning against the wall, sliding over, in the way. It hangs the bike from its top tube on a small wooden cradle while doubling as a drop zone — a shelf and hooks for the helmet, keys, and gloves that always end up on the floor next to it.
The critical joints are the two sides screwed into the back, because those carry the entire weight of the bike. Use ample glue there and predrill the screw holes if the wood shows any sign of splitting — a split at that joint is a bike on the floor. The front board and shelf are not structural; brad nails are fine for those.
The notch that actually holds the bike is cut with a jigsaw or hole saw and doesn't need to be deep — just enough of a saddle to stop the top tube from rolling off. When you mount it, the only thing that matters is the two 3" screws going into a wall stud, not just drywall. A bike is heavy and lives on this thing 23 hours a day; a drywall anchor will eventually let go. Add a handle and hooks underneath for the drop-zone duty.

Cut notches out of the back piece with a jigsaw so the ends of the 1x4 sides seat into it cleanly. This locks the sides in position and takes some of the shear load off the screws.
Screw the two 1x4 sides to the back with two screws into each. This is the structural joint that carries the bike, so use ample glue, and take the extra minute to predrill if the wood shows any sign of splitting. A split here means the bike ends up on the floor.
Attach the bottom shelf to the sides and back with glue and screws, predrilling if needed. Then add the front board — it's not structural, so 1-1/4" brad nails are fine here if you have them, or a couple of screws.
Use a jigsaw or hole saw to cut the saddle notch that cradles the bike's top tube. It doesn't need to be deep — just enough to keep the bike from rolling sideways off the shelf. Sand everything smooth.
Mount the hanger to the wall with the 3" screws driven into a wall stud, at least two of them. Drywall anchors are not enough for a bike that hangs here full-time. Add the handle and hooks underneath for helmet and keys.
