This isn't a cabinet in the usual sense — it's two open towers and a bridging top board, built specifically to close the gap between a vanity and the ceiling while hiding light fixtures inside that gap. Every dimension in the cut list is a starting point, not a spec: your actual build size depends on your ceiling height, your vanity's width, and where your existing vanity light sits, and the plan says so directly rather than pretending one size fits every bathroom.
Build the two towers on the ground first — simple butt-jointed boxes, glued and nailed. Attach the top board that will carry the recessed lights while everything is still on the ground and easy to reach, and do the actual electrical work at this stage too: install the light fixtures and connect their wiring while the whole assembly is sitting on a workbench, not balanced on a ladder. The only wiring left for once the hutch is mounted is connecting to the existing vanity light box, which is a much smaller job than wiring blind overhead.
Once it's built, slide the whole assembly into place against the wall and nail through the bottom board to secure it — if the towers happen to land on wall studs you can screw through them directly, but if they don't (as in the source build), resting the piece on the vanity top and securing it with base moulding is a legitimate, tested approach. Base moulding around the bottom and crown moulding around the top both add real joint strength in addition to finishing the look, so don't treat either as purely decorative.
This project includes household electrical wiring. Recessed lighting work should follow your local electrical code, and if you're not confident working with the existing vanity light's wiring, have a licensed electrician handle that portion — the woodworking box is the easy part.

Build two towers from the 1x8 boards using 1-1/4" finish nails and glue. Adjust your tower height and width to your own bathroom BEFORE cutting — the right size depends on where your vanity light sits, how much clearance you have above the vanity, and how wide your vanity and sink are.
Once the two towers are built, nail the light board on top, connecting them — sized to your vanity's actual width (48" for a standard vanity). This board is what the recessed lights mount into.
Install the recessed lights into the light board and connect all the wiring while the assembly is still on the ground — this is much easier and safer than doing it overhead once the hutch is mounted. Once it's in place, all that's left is connecting to the existing vanity light box.
This is household electrical wiring — follow your local code, and bring in a licensed electrician for this step if you're not confident with it.
Move the built and wired hutch into place over the vanity. If the towers land on wall studs, secure them there directly. If they don't — which is common, since tower spacing rarely lines up with stud spacing — the hutch can rest on the vanity top and be held in place by the base moulding added in a later step; this has held up for years in real use.
Nail through the bottom board to attach, leaving enough clearance from the ceiling to maneuver the box into place without damaging it.
If your vanity sits in a corner, cut and add the corner trim piece and the longer front-trim length (49-1/2" instead of 48-3/4") to account for the wall relationship — skip this step entirely for a standard, non-corner install.
Cut and attach the base moulding around the bottom of the hutch, using shorter nails than you used for the case itself — base moulding usually runs under 3/4" thick. This adds a finished detail and meaningfully strengthens the bottom joint, especially if the towers aren't anchored to studs.
Run crown moulding around the entire room, including across the top of the vanity hutch, to finish out the top joint and tie the piece visually into the room.
