Mark the center points for each hole on the two shelf boards, then drill. Make a few practice holes in scrap first to check your technique, and clamp the board down securely before drilling. A hole saw is the cleanest method. With a spade bit, drill halfway through from the top face, flip the board, and finish from the back — pushing straight through from one side tears out the far face. Lightly sand the hole edges smooth once you're done.

Attach the sides to the egg shelves, two screws per joint. Brad nails and wood glue, or 1-1/4" pocket holes set to 3/4", both work as alternatives. If using pocket holes, attach the top shelf first from underneath, then the bottom shelf from underneath, so you can still fit a drill inside as the piece closes up.

Sand and finish. For the taller, narrower two-dozen-egg version built from 1x4s instead, follow the same steps — just note it's less stable freestanding, so consider anchoring it to a wall.
