Decorative Window Shutters and Flower Boxes

Starting with the bottom board, attach the two angled side pieces with glue and a nailer. The angled end of each side should face the front of the box, with the longer edge on top.

Slide the rear piece in between the two side pieces and glue and nail it to the sides and bottom.

Glue and nail the front piece on, keeping its top edge flush with the sides. The bottom of the front piece slants inward to match the angled sides, so a light sanding pass on the bottom board may be needed for a tight fit.

Center each finished box under its window and attach to the wall with wood glue and a nailer.

Lay the shutter boards flat in matched pairs, aligning the edges flush. Cut a decorative design — roughly 3" — out of paper as a template, and trace it onto each pair, centering the design between the two boards so it lines up once glued. Cut along your lines with a jigsaw and sand every edge smooth.

With the boards still paired, lay a paper window template on top, flush to the bottom and outside edges, and trace the arch that spans across each pair. Cut the arch with a jigsaw and sand the edges. Glue each pair together into one finished shutter panel and clamp until dry, wiping away any glue squeeze-out before it sets.

Install a shutter on each side of the window with small decorative hinges and screws. Shim each shutter at least 1/8" above the windowsill so it doesn't scrape the sill as it opens and closes.
