This is the classic red wagon reinterpreted in a single pine board and a handful of decorative strips. The crate itself is dead simple — a bottom panel boxed in by 1x12 ends and 1x3 sides — but two details push it past "box on wheels" into something that reads as a real vintage wagon.
First, the decorative ribs: thin strips of metal or wood lath run vertically down the sides, screwed on after predrilling holes in the metal so it doesn't crack when the screw bites. This is purely cosmetic, but it's the detail that makes the finished wagon photograph like the steel original instead of a plywood crate.
Second, the SHEAR PIN in the handle assembly is deliberate, not a compromise — it's a sacrificial part, meant to be the weakest link in the pull chain. If the handle ever gets over-stressed (a kid standing on it, a load that's too heavy, a sharp yank), the shear pin is designed to be what breaks, not the wagon's frame or the child pulling it. Keep a few spares; replacing a $1 pin is the entire point of including one.
Wheel choice matters more than it looks like it should: fixed wheels at the back and swivel at the front steer like a real wagon (push the handle, the front end turns), while four swivel wheels turn in place more like a shopping cart. Either works — pick based on whether the wagon needs to track straight when pulled or spin in a tight space.
All visible screw holes in the sides are worth taking your time over if this is getting a stain finish rather than paint — a wandering screw line down a see-through-finish side is the kind of thing that only bothers the builder, but it bothers the builder every time they look at it.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Attach the bottom panel to the front and back 1x12 pieces with 3/4" pocket holes and 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, which hides the pocket holes on the underside. A predrilled 2" screw works as an alternative. Glue every joint here — this project should last.
Attach the 1x3 side boards to the 1x12 framing with 2" screws and glue. Take your time lining the screws up in a straight, even line — these holes may be visible in a stained finish.
Attach the decorative metal or lath pieces to the sides with 3/4" screws. If using metal, predrill the holes in the metal first so it doesn't crack when the screw goes through.
Attach the caster wheels to the underside of the wagon crate. If using two fixed and two swivel wheels, place the fixed ones at the back — like a car, where only the front end steers. All four swivel casters also work, and turn more like a shopping cart than a wagon.
Insert the dowel grip into the drilled end of the 1x2 handle with glue. Mount the two L brackets to the front of the wagon and pivot-attach the handle through them with the shear pin.
The shear pin is deliberately the weakest part of this whole assembly — if the handle is ever over-stressed, it's designed to break before anything else does. Keep a spare pin or two on hand; that's the entire reason it's there instead of a stronger fastener.
