Step-by-step build — 8 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Lay out the front and back frames carefully and attach the mattress cleats, keeping the roof angles right at the tops of the legs. Confirm the tops of the legs measure 75" wide, matching the bottom.
Attach the front frame to the back frame with the angled roof trim.
Attach the remaining roof trim to the fronts of the legs and the back. Keep the front trim low enough that the roofing boards will lay flat along the reference line.
Attach the bottom row of side siding first, checking square and level, then work upward to complete the siding on all sides.
Add the front mattress trim and the ladder step, centering the step vertically on the height of the bed.
Attach the center roof board first, screwing carefully into the front 1x6 roofing trim. Working from the center outward, attach the remaining roof boards.
Lay the 2x4 slats inside the bed on the mattress cleats, spaced about 5" apart, and attach with screws. Add more slats if your mattress requires firmer support.
Sand all surfaces and apply primer and paint, or stain and poly.
