The tilt-out shoe cabinet is the classic slim-hallway answer to the shoe pile: door faces that look like a dresser but pivot forward, revealing angled bins the shoes drop into. The store version is particleboard; this one is 1x8 pine and better ideas.
The pivot is the charming part: 3/8" wood DOWELS instead of hinges. Each bin gets clamped centered in its opening with 1/8" gaps, then a 3/8" hole is drilled through the cabinet side into the bin's bottom front corner, and a dowel pin drops in — instant pivot, no hardware alignment, and the bin lifts OUT entirely when you want to shake the gravel from it. Traditional hinges remain the fallback (the source offers both), but try the dowels; they're the better idea.
Two honest quirks come with the tilt-out format, and this plan handles both. First: the bins need something to stop them at the open position — here it's a used fabric BELT, cut into straps, screwed inside each bin and to the shelf below. Second: a shallow cabinet whose entire contents lever forward is a tipping machine, so the 1x2 cleat at the back gets screwed to a WALL STUD. That cleat is load-bearing honesty, not an optional step.
Board-width warning from the source that applies twice here: 1x8s vary mill to mill, so the doors are built first and the box is sized around the doors' REAL dimensions plus 1/8" gaps — the reverse of the usual order, and the reason this plan's numbers say 'approximately.' Measure your boards; trust your tape.

Join each pair of 1x8 door faces edge-to-edge — pocket holes if you have the jig; if not, the faces get nailed to the bin dividers in the next step instead, which works fine.
Then measure the finished doors' overall height and WRITE IT DOWN. Mill-to-mill width variance means your doors, not the plan, dictate the box dimensions from here on.
Attach a 1x6 bin bottom to the base of each door with 2" screws (or pocket screws) and glue. Cut the dividers to your doors' height, round their top-front corners with the jigsaw — square corners jam against the shelf mid-tilt — and attach: one at each end, one in the middle. More dividers = more door support and more shoe slots; add them freely.
Screw and glue the 1x2 bin backs across the dividers. Without them, the shoes ride the tilt right out onto the floor, which rather defeats the cabinet.
Figure the side height from your doors: door heights plus 1/8" gap above and below each. Cut the sides to that, then assemble the box — sides, top, bottom, middle shelf — around the bins' real dimensions. The box serves the doors here, not the other way around.
Clamp each bin centered in its opening, 1/8" gap all around (no clamps? 1-1/4" screws driven temporarily from inside the bins hold position). Drill a 3/8" hole through the cabinet side into the bin's bottom-front corner — to the dowel's depth, and CAREFULLY aimed so it lands in the bin's corner stock, not past it.
Insert the dowels and test the tilt. Sticky? Ease the bin's rounded corners a touch more. Prefer hardware? Traditional hinges at the bottom front do the same job with less magic.
Attach the 2x2 front legs (baseboard height + 1", so the cabinet stands proud of the trim and leans to the wall above it) and the 1x2 aprons across the front and sides.
With a helper steadying the bins (the source is candid: two legs and floppy bins make this the awkward step), tilt each bin to its maximum useful opening, cut belt segments to that reach, and screw one strap near each end of each bin — bin side and shelf-below side.
An old fabric belt is genuinely the right material: strong in tension, soft-edged, already broken in.
Mount the magnetic clasps at the sides of each opening for a tight closed fit, add the knobs, and finish the piece.
Then the non-negotiable: screw the 1x2 cleat through the back into a WALL STUD, level. Every open bin cantilevers the cabinet's contents forward — the cleat is what makes that a feature instead of a fall. Load it with the shoe pile from beside the door; enjoy the hallway you forgot was there.
