This bed's signature is a real tapered leg, cut on a table saw with a tapered-leg jig rather than left as a plain rectangular 2x8 or built up from 2x4s like this catalog's other platform beds — the taper here is a genuine half-inch reduction per side, starting 7-1/2" down from the top of the leg to clear where the 2x8 frame side attaches. Pre-finishing the legs and 2x8 frame sides before assembly is a deliberate sequencing choice, not a shortcut — sanding, sealing, and letting polyurethane cure fully on flat, unassembled boards produces a cleaner finish than trying to get into inside corners after the frame is built.
Once finish is fully cured, the 2x4 slat supports attach to each frame side with construction adhesive and screws spaced every 2", set 1/2" up from the bottom edge of each 2x8 — arrange the sides so the best-finished face of each 2x8 ends up facing outward, since this seam is visible on the assembled bed.
Attach the tapered legs to the frame sides working upside down, which makes it easier to keep the top of each leg flush with the top of the frame side while driving screws into the pre-drilled pocket holes. The top and bottom rails go on the same way, upside down, before flipping the whole frame over and adding fifteen 1x3 slats as mattress support, evenly spaced and screwed to the slat supports.

Using a table saw with a tapered-leg jig, taper each leg by 1/2" per side, starting 7-1/2" from the top of the leg to clear the frame side attachment.
Sand and seal the legs and 2x8 frame sides with polyurethane, letting the finish cure fully per the product's instructions before assembly.
Pre-drill pocket holes in both ends of the 2x4 slat supports and the finished 2x8 frame sides. Attach with construction adhesive and 2-1/2" wood screws spaced about 2" apart, positioned 1/2" up from the bottom of each frame side. Arrange so the best-finished face of each 2x8 faces outward.
Working upside down, attach a tapered leg to each end of the two frame sides, aligning the top of each leg with the top of the frame side. Drive 2-1/2" pocket screws into the pre-drilled holes.
Working upside down, pre-drill pocket holes and attach the top and bottom 2x8 rails to the assembled frame sides.
Flip the frame right-side up. Evenly space and secure fifteen 1x3 slats to the slat supports with wood screws.
