Slotted knife blocks are a bad design: the slots are impossible to clean, and every insertion drags the edge across wood. A magnetic block holds knives on the face — visible, wipeable, and it never touches the cutting edge.
The trick is burying the magnets close enough to the surface to grip through the wood, but not so close that they show. About 1/8" of wood over an N42 magnet holds a chef's knife confidently.

A board foot is a volume, not a length: 144 cubic inches, or a piece 1″ thick by 12″ wide by 12″ long. The “≈” note beside each row shows roughly how much 3/4″ × 6″ board that works out to.

Walnut front to 1/2", maple back to 3/4". Both flat, both the same width and length.
Any cup here means a visible glue line later.
On the drill press, with a depth stop. Bore ten 3/4" flat-bottomed pockets (Forstner bit) into the BACK face of the walnut slab, in two staggered rows.
Set the depth so exactly 1/8" of walnut remains over each magnet. Do the arithmetic: 1/2" slab − 1/8" remaining = 3/8" pocket for a 1/8"-thick magnet, leaving room.
Too deep → weak hold. Too shallow → a visible bump, or worse, a magnet that breaks through when you sand.
Test on a scrap first. Bore one pocket, drop a magnet in, and see if it holds your heaviest knife through the remaining wood.
Before gluing anything: set the magnets in their pockets and make sure they're all oriented the same way — same pole facing out.
Mixed polarity creates weak spots where adjacent fields fight each other. Mark the faces with a Sharpie as you go.
A drop of epoxy in each pocket, press the magnet in flush or slightly below the surface.
Epoxy, not wood glue — PVA doesn't bond to neodymium. A magnet that comes loose inside a sealed block cannot be fixed.
Let it cure fully before the next step.
Glue the maple back to the walnut front, sandwiching the magnets completely.
Clamp evenly across the whole face — cauls help. Squeeze-out should appear along the whole perimeter. Overnight cure.
Cut a dado in the base at about 10° off vertical, sized to accept the bottom of the slab.
That lean is not cosmetic: a heavy chef's knife slapping onto a vertical block will tip it forward off the counter. Leaning back, the block's center of gravity stays behind the knives.
Glue the slab into the base.
Chamfer or round over all the edges. Sand to 220.
Mineral oil and wax — it lives in a kitchen and knives will scrape it, so use a finish that's food-safe and easy to renew.
Stick your knives to it. The satisfying *clack* is the payoff.
